Future Career

June 14th, 2014 at 05:41 am

Right now I am in college and I am 100% sure that I want to go into finance, but I don't exactly know if my plan is reasonable or just the best option to go. I originally wanted to become a Financial Advisor because I love figuring out the best place to put your money. Also, I have been watching Suze Orman ever since I was 13 years old. I love her!
For my career, like I am sure anybody else, I want to make as much money as I can. So I figured instead of starting off as an advisor, I would become a Financial Analyst. I changed my mind because I don't want to work off of commission right out of college, and I figured if I became an Analyst first, I could earn some credentials and have a background in the stock market. I want to make sure that I can give the best possible advice to clients with their money as I can.
I love money, and I love making money, but only honest money. I would never want to advise someone to do something that is wrong.

Does anyone have any suggestions of other careers in finance?

Is anyone in the field? If you are I would absolutely love to hear any advice/comments about the field! I love to learn!

Or has anyone had an appointment with an advisor? Was it a good experience? Or do you have any comments about it?

Monkey Momma is a CPA. Jim in Ohio is a contributor on the Forums side of the site, and he spent some time as a financial advisor.

I have a Finance degree, and I did look into the financial advisor right out of college. I did turn it down and was good in hindsight as I was pregnant 3 months later...there is no way I could have committed 60 hours + a week to get the business off the ground. I also seem to have a hard time advising people to invest in loaded mutual funds as a way for payment, although I might be more likely to go the upfront fee based route first.

My main job out of college before becoming a stay at home mom was customer service (worked for the transfer agency) for a large mutual fund company. I loved that job! I loved explaining the basics to people who didn't get correct information from their broker. I learned so much there too. I know need to figure how to get back into the industry as my kids are getting close to college age!

    Good luck!
